Jackfruit & Mangosteen in the Oxford English Dictionary Empty Jackfruit & Mangosteen in the Oxford English Dictionary

Jackfruit " a. The fruit of a tree (Artocarpus integrifolia) of the East Indies, resembling the bread-fruit, but larger and of coarser quality. Also the tree itself."
Coarser than bread-fruit? It is like saying silk is coarser than jute! And "East Indies"? In the 21th century? It really shows how colonial terms still continue to colour our perceptions of the non-Western world. How can the OED, the most respected authority on the English language, promote aspects of the language of colonization?
When one cannot even use "mankind" anymore without being challenged by feminists, the OED still gets away with "East Indies". It could be understood if some orientals would be reluctant to seek entrance to the OED's editorial office still fearing to see the sign: "No dogs or Chinese allowed!".

And then the mangosteen is " 1. The fruit of the East Indian tree Garcinia Mangostana (family Guttiferæ)...[a. Malay mangustan.]
The word "mangostan" is not Malay.Early European travellers picked it up in Ternate, Eastern Indonesia, while buying cloves there.
In Malay it is "manggis".
I strongly believe that it is one of the introduced species to the Malay Peninsula. The aboriginal Semang on the peninsula or the dayak tribes of Sarawak have no traditional knowledge of it.
