Marketing of Ripe Fruits within Malaysia
Marketing of Ripe Fruits within Malaysia
Fruit season on the Malay Peninsula is usually June-September. Fruit
season in Sarawak is November-February. There is no overlapping. That
means that consumers in Malaysia could have access to fresh Malaysian
grown fruits at least 8 months a year. However, transport of produce
between East and West Malaysia by private shipping is forbiddingly
costly. Could the Malaysian government solve this problem? Maybe by
purchasing a vessel or two [maybe in cooperation with Petronas or
other National big players] and provide much needed subsidy to help
the producers. What the Malaysian government does to help the farmers
beside offering them money to wipe out their gardens and plant oil
palms or rubber? Right now, during fruit season in Sarawak, consumers
on the peninsula are forced to by genetically engineered, unhealthy
fruits imported from Thailand while generic fruits are left rotting on
the trees in Sarawak for lack of marketing opportunities. I always
believed in the double win attitude, and what would be a better
example then helping the producers in Sarawak at the same time
providing healthy homegrown fruits to the inhabitants on the
Peninsula. If it is true that there is only 1 Malaysia (at least
according to Mr Najib) provide the facilities to become really ONE.
