"Fruits of South-East Asia, Facts and Folklore" by Jaquelin M. Piper, 1989 Oxford University Press, Singapore, is
a disgrace.Unfortunately, however, it is in English. Her limited knowledge about the region is understandable,
the book seems like a "book for bucks" quick project with a deadline. So she went to the library, but she got sloppy,
therefore even her quotations are wrong. For example on page 19 about Linschoten's remark of the "odd affinity between durian and the leaves of betel-pepper" she has quoted from a guy named Bowring without actually checking the original source. The result is misquotation. The quoted remark being added to Linschoten's manuscript by Bernard Paludanus of Amsterdam, (and even he copied this information from Acosta (1578) whose knowledge also based on secondhand information.
And the list of mistakes goes on and on.
It is regrettable that a superficial book could be published by Oxford University Press, even though if it was the Singapore branch!
